Wasserratte ist ein biologisch ungenauer Begriff zur Bezeichnung verschiedener Nagetier-Arten, die nicht miteinander verwandt sind. Dies sind:

• in Eurasien die Schermäuse und hiervon vor allem die Ostschermaus
• in Afrika die Afrikanische Wasserratte (Colomys goslingi)
• in Südamerika die Alfaro-Wasserratten (Sigmodontomys) und die Neotropischen Wasserratten (Nectomys)
• auf Neuguinea die Neuguinea-Wasserratten (Leptomys) und die Neuguinea-Bergwasserratten (Paraleptomys)
• ferner die Fischratten und die Schwimmratten, und oft noch weitere wassergebundene Taxa kleiner Nagetiere
• die Nutria wird auch Wasserratte genannt.
